Overview
The day begins with pick up at your hotel in Agra, heading approximately two and a half hours south through Madhya Pradesh: on the way to the historic city of Gwalior.
The imposing Gwalior Fort is our first stop. Inside this fortress built in the 15th century by order of the Rajah (ruler) Man Singh Tomar, we will learn about the history of its turbulent past… Pay close attention to the different carved sculptures of the bastion, testament to the long history of the fort.
After the Gwalior Fort, we will have a lunch break in which you will have an hour of free time to taste some of the local specialities in one of the nearby restaurants. A perfect opportunity to try something new!
Then after lunch, we will continue our tour of Gwalior heading to the Jai Vilas Palace. Here we’ll learn about its construction and the reasons why its architecture is strikingly reminiscent of certain well-known European buildings.
The palace also houses the Scindia Museum, which takes its name from one of the most prominent dynasties in Gwalior. Here is where you’ll learn more about the members of this family so central to local history, visiting the different rooms of the museum, which house carriages, sculptures and numerous pieces of decorative arts, including carved Belgian glass furniture.
After the guided tour of the museum, we will finally return to your hotel in Agra.
